Bel-Gem Waffles
Belgian waffles started in New York back in the 1960's by a guy named Maurice Vermersch who originated from Brussels, Belgium. That's how these waffles got their name; Bel-Gem Waffles. Although you can buy the mix straight from the store for ease, I tend to like to make everything at home. I feel like it's more fresh and makes me feel better about making it from scratch. Today I will be showing you how to make home-made Belgian Waffles which can be topped with almost any fruit you like, Nutella, syrup, nuts and many more. I will top mine off with sliced bananas and walnuts along with Aunt Jemima's pancake syrup.
Ingredients:
4 Teaspoons Baking Powder
2 Cups of Flour
2 Cups of Milk
2 Eggs
1 Teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 Cup of Vegetable Oil (I used Olive Oil)
1/2 Teaspoon Salt
1/4 Cup of Sugar
Directions:
Butter or oil the waffle maker. Preheat on medium heat.
In a large bowl, sift together the flour, salt, sugar and baking powder.
In an electric mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites on medium speed to create a fluffy meringue like texture.
In another bowl, mix together the egg yolks, milk, oil, vanilla (you may use vanilla powder but add extra for flavor), and stir it lightly.
Once the egg mixture has become a white fluffy texture that it can stay still, add it to the milk mixture. Fold it together until well incorporated.
Add the dry ingredients to this mixture and stir again until well incorporated. Once completely mixed, pour the batter into the waffle maker. Make sure to not over flow. Let cook for about 5-7 minutes. Make sure to not burn them!
