Home Made Chai Lattes

In India, chai is more than just a cup of tea to start the day. It is estimated that 837,000 tons of the tea is consumed every year! Considered one of the oldest drinks in history, this sweet tea was used in ancient India as a healing concoction made with herbs and spices. To this day, it is believed that a cup of chai tea after every meal aids in digestion and can prevent cancer and diabetes.

Besides being the staple of every Indian home, chai is my personal obsession. It has been my go-to order at any coffee shop (with my favorite to this day being the from Green T Coffee Shop outside of the Roslindal T station in Roslindal, MA! They have the beat vegan options 😋). But nothing beats a good, homemade chai latte... you can spice it to perfection and add a little whipped cream to top it off!
Today, I will show you how to make a home made chai latte that will fill and energize you all morning. Not to mention, it’ll be better than Starbucks 😏 The recipe bellow will serve 3.

Gather Ingredients:

1-inch piece fresh ginger, cut into thin rounds
1 cinnamon sticks
1 teaspoons black peppercorns
5 whole cloves
3 cardamom pods
3 cups cold water
3 bags of black tea
1 cup of your choice milk
1/4 cup (packed) golden brown sugar

Directions:

1. Combine first 5 ingredients in medium saucepan and lightly crush or bruise spices.
2. Add 3 cups water and bring it to a boil.
3. Reduce the heat, partially cover pan, and allow the mixture to simmer for 10 minutes.

4. Remove from heat and add all 3 tea bags, allowing it to steep for about 5 minutes.
5. Discard the tea bags.
Hint: You can stop at this step, allowing the mixture to cool, and storing it in the fridge for later consumption.
6. Add milk and sugar. Bring the tea to a simmer over high heat, whisking it until sugar dissolves.
7. Strain chai into a teapot and serve hot!
